Biogas Technology Tour and Capacity Building Workshop for South African Market

A technology study tour and workshops are planned for March to share lessons learned from four operational project sites in South Africa’s developing biogas market.

The Digital Global Biogas Cooperation (DiBiCoo) project will host the study tour and capacity building workshop in South Africa from March 22-24, 2022. Aimed at trade delegations, interested stakeholders and project partners, the hybrid events can be attended in person or online through the Enlit Africa Connect platform.

These sessions on biogas technology will have two parts. The first episode will take place in Gauteng on March 22, 2022 and the second will take place in the Western Cape on March 24, 2022.

While capacity building workshops will discuss the current and future potential of digestate management and valorization.

DiBiCoo is a cooperation project between biogas technology players in developed and developing countries. The cooperation aims to support the European biogas/biomethane industry by preparing markets for the export of sustainable biogas/biomethane technologies from Europe to developing and emerging markets.

This initiative has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 857804 (DiBiCoo – Digital Global Biogas Cooperation).

Bringing biogas technology to life

Yaseen Salie, WISP facilitator and bioenergy analyst, leading the DiBiCoo project for GreenCape: “The study trip will allow stakeholders in developing and developed biogas markets to see existing technologies in operation under real-world conditions and learn more about the challenges and obstacles that were overcome to establish these projects.

Between the scheduled study visits, on March 23, 2022, GreenCape will host the DiBiCoo-RSA 2 capacity building workshop. The objectives of the capacity building workshop will provide opportunities for knowledge sharing.

“The aim of this capacity building course will be to provide information and encourage best practices for the management and enrichment of digestate in the development and implementation of biogas projects,” adds Salie.

What you will learn

  • Understand the current context and the impact of digestate on the development and implementation of biogas projects in South Africa.
  • Overview of the current and future activities of the South African Biogas Industry Association with respect to the management and use of digestate in South Africa.
  • Argentina is sharing lessons and knowledge from its biogas and digestate life cycle assessment studies.
  • Case Study of Digestate Enrichment and Management Practices in South Africa.
  • Identification of ways of use for the management and valorization of digestate in South Africa.

The target audience for these hybrid events includes turnkey suppliers, project owners, municipalities and off-take investors and customers interested in the management and valorization of digestate produced by biogas plants.

The secondary audience is made up of agricultural actors and regulators who want to better understand how to reduce the risks associated with the use of digestate in the agricultural sector.
